David Akin's Roundup
Clippings of #cdnpoli, #media, and #tech content aimed at those with an interest in Canadian politics.
Hello again!
I think I may have found a replacement for the now-defunct Revue platform and it's this one, created by a Kelowna, B.C. company: Goodbits.io. Like Revue, this platform allows me to easily collect content as I go about my day online and it lets me rapidly assemble it into the form you're going to see below.
That said: Goodbits.io is not free and I'm going to incur some costs to publish on this platform. And that means that, at some point, I'm likely to going to have to pass the virtual hat to those, like you, who have expressed an interest in receiving this near-daily collection of clippings. U think $2 a month is asking too much? Or $20 a year? Please reply to this newsletter and let me know. (Not holding you to anything right now! Just testing the waters!)

One useability note: You will see a "Read More" button accompanying some clips -- but generally speaking, if you want to read an item, just click/tap on the headline.

Oh -- and in the meantime -- you are one of a select handful getting this newsletter. You were selected because you were kind enough to respond positively to the Revue version of this. For now, this newsletter remains in "development" so you may see different features added or subtracted from time to time. Your feedback about this platform, its design, ease of use and so on much appreciated. Thanks as always for reading!

The Russian Embassy in Ottawa refused to receive Russian national Elena Pushkareva, who lives in Canada, because she subscribes to a Facebook group called “For the beautiful Russia of the future.” The Facebook group takes its name from the phrase “beautiful Russia of the future,” which jailed opposition leader Alexey Navalny and his team often use. Pushkareva reported the incident with the Russian Embassy to the Navalny team’s publication, Sirena.

Issued this day ...
... in 2014: Scott # 2702: Black History Month: Africville. Design: Karen Smith Design.
Stamp
Canada Post first issued stamps to mark Black History Month in 2009 and has been doing so every year since. The 2014 issue featured a pair of stamps recognizing African-Canadian neighbourhoods. This stamp, Scott 2702, recognized the former Halifax neighbourhood of Africville -- if you're ever in Halifax and have not yet done so, do check out the Africville Museum -- while Scott 2703 recognized the Vancouver neighbourhood of Hogan's Alley.
