I get transcripts of just about every scrum held in the House of Commons foyer. Yesterday, I asked ChatGPT to give me a 150-word summary of a scrum Govt House Leader Mark Holland gave to reporters in which the chief line of inquiry by reporters was the declared intention by the Conservatives to obstruct passage of the 2023 budget. Here's the unedited ChatGPT summary of the 1,000 word transcript. Seems a pretty accurate summary to me. Reporters on the Hill have access to an incredible amount of raw text every -- Hansard, press conferences, committee meetings and so on. I'll be fiddling with ways tools like ChatGPT can be harnessed by journalists to make some sense of all that text that comes our way each day. And remember as you read this: This is not an AI generated "news story". ChatGPT was only instructed to generate a brief summary of responses Holland gave to questions real human reporters put to him.

In a pre-Question Period scrum, Hon. Mark Holland, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, expressed his strong disapproval of the Conservatives' tactics in Parliament. He criticized their behavior as completely unacceptable and a hijacking of the parliamentary process. Holland accused the Conservatives of using fake points of order and pretending to have technical problems to obstruct the House's work. He emphasized that the Conservatives, with only one-third of the seats, are dictating to all other parties and impeding the elected will of the House. Holland highlighted the absurdity of their demands, particularly their opposition to putting a price on pollution, which contradicts their own previous commitment. He expressed determination to continue working through their tactics and complete the work of Parliament. Holland also addressed questions about the budget and the difference in handling the motion related to David Johnston, stating that national security information should be appropriately handled and opposition parties should engage in briefings to address their questions. He concluded by emphasizing that the Conservatives' tactics reveal their disrespect for the institution of the House of Commons.
