Ahead of Carney summit, First Nations chiefs slam C-5
Prime Minister Mark Carney will convene a summit with Indigenous leaders Thursday in Gatineau, Que. It's the first time a prime minister has held such a summit in 2012. And this summit has one topic: Bill C-5, the so-called "Building Canada Act" which the Carney government says will help speed up development projects deemed to be in the national interest -- projects like ports, pipelines, energy transmission lines and so on. But as David Akin reports, Carney will be facing a group of Indigenous leaders united in opposition to C-5. [Global National]
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he wants Canada's election laws changed to prevent long ballot protests — as he is set to face another one next month. [CBC]
A major union leader says Pierre Poilievre's claim that he lost his seat because of his pledge to cut the public service is "simplistic" and should also be attributed to voters linking the Conservative leader to U.S. President Donald Trump. "I think what people saw was too many similarities. People see the platform that was presented. They see past decision-making and they link it to what's happening down south in an extreme manner," said Sharon DeSousa, national president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), the largest federal public sector union. Canadian Prime Minister Carney and BC Premier Eby are advancing the idea of initiating trade agreement negotiations to set aside the enforcement of the U.S. trade laws against unfairly traded and unfairly priced Canadian lumber imports. Premier Eby makes clear that Canada wants the United States to voluntarily terminate these effective U.S. trade law cases in order to "secure jobs for Canadian workers." . [US Lumber Coalition]
