Carney to meet with cabinet, premiers following Trump's latest tariff threat
The Prime Minister's Office announced there will be a cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss ongoing Canada-U.S. trade negotiations. Carney's office said he also will meet with the premiers on July 22 as they gather for the annual Council of the Federation conference in Huntsville, Ont. [CP]
The disclosure states that Carney and the commissioner have agreed to a conflict of interest screen "aimed at preventing any opportunity" to further Carney's interests "or to improperly further those of Brookfield Asset Management, Brookfield Corporation, and Stripe Inc., and any company owned or controlled by them." Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre says he lost his riding of Carleton in the federal election due to an "aggressive" campaign by public sector unions after he was honest about wanting to cut federal worker jobs. [CBC]
Bill C-5, the Building Canada Act, allows cabinet to quickly grant federal approvals for big industrial projects like mines, ports and pipelines by sidestepping existing laws. Carney promised to meet with First Nations after chiefs said their rights were not respected by the rush to push the bill through Parliament. [CP]
Here is the briefing binder prepared by the department for Kody Blois as he took on the role of Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food in March. Sadly for Mr. Blois, he was not appointed to cabinet after the election in April. The job of Ag Minister went to PEI's Heath MacDonald instead who, I suspect, got a briefing book similar to this one. Also: This link is particularly useful because it contains links to briefing binders prepared for Lawrence MacAulay when he took the Ag job in 2023 and for Marie-Claude Bibeau who had the job in both 2019 and 2021. There are also Deputy Ministers briefing binders. - DA [Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada]
