Issued this day ...
Issued this day in 2001: Sc # 1901: Toronto Blue Jays. Design: Paul Haslip / Omar Morson.
Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the Toronto’s MLB franchise.

Remarkably, this was the first major league sports franchise to be featured on a Canadian stamp. Canada Post would not get around to a stamp featuring the most valuable sports franchise in the country — the Maple Leafs — for another dozen years, in 2013 (see Sc 2664) !

And while the Toronto Argonauts and all other CFL teams got their own stamps in 2012 (Sc 2559-2566), we’re still waiting for a Toronto Raptors stamp. Canada Post missed that franchise’s 25th anniversary in 2020 and missed a chance to put a stamp out when the Raptors won their one and only championship season in 2019.

But back to this Blue Jays stamp: Hard to make it out in this scan of my copy but the stamp had an irregular shape that followed the bird’s beak, the banner, and the baseball.
