As negotiations begin on Ottawa’s multi-billion health funding offer, PM Justin Trudeau says it’s time provinces use more of their own surplus budgets to support health workers.

Canada's aid sector is nervously awaiting this spring's federal budget amid fears of funding cuts that could require projects abroad to shut down.

Riding Redistribution notes
We are in the midst of re-drawing Canada's electoral map, preparing for the a general election with 343 seats up for grabs instead of the current 338. The business of drawing and re-drawing boundaries is left up to individual non-partisan commissions in each province.

In the week that just past, the commissions for Ontario and B.C. released their final reports/riding maps. I can tell you that in every province there is a lot of change. I'm still in the process of going through them all but one theme that has emerged straight-away is that some commissions sought to use this redistribution effort -- it happens every ten years -- as a means to recognize Indigenous origins of many parts of Canada by including Indigenous names into riding names.

Many ridings in the country already incorporate Indigenous names into their title -- Tobique--Mactaquac in NB, Esquimalt--Saanich--Sooke in BC, Edmonton--Wetaskawin in AB and so on.

Now, there will be more.

Here, for example, are the Ontario ridings that will have new names (and often new boundaries) that include an Indigenous component:
  • Algonquin-Renfrew-Pembroke
  • Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations
  • Hastings-Lennox and Addington-Tyendinaga
  • Kapuskasing-Timmins-Mushkegowuk
  • Kenora-Kiiwetinoong
  • Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong
  • Taiaiako'n-Parkdale-High Park
The Quebec commission has done the same and here are new riding names in that province with an Indigenous component:
  • Bécancour-Saurel-Odanak
  • Côte-Nord--Kawawachikamach--Uapashke
  • Gaspésie--Les îles-de-la-Madeleine-Listuguj
  • Joliette-Manawan
  • La Prairie-Atateken
  • Louis-Saint-Laurent--Akiawenhrahk
  • Montmagny--Témiscouata--Kataskomiq
  • Pontiac--Kitigan Zibi
Learn more about these commissions and review the new electoral maps for yourself here. At that site, click on "The Commissions" to get maps for each province.

I expect you'll see additional "Riding redistribution notes" here over the coming days. - DA
Media
Publisher says story did not meet outlet’s standards. Journalists say there was editorial interference. Resignations come as three other reporters lose jobs in unrelated layoffs.

The Florida governor and possible presidential candidate is the latest in a string of Republicans to target the Supreme Court decision that has long protected journalists accused of defamation.

Aisling Murphy: I started as a journalist at the Star just as public trust was eroding in the profession — these are the journalists who’ve taught me how it’s done.
