Deal reached on $1.2B Calgary Flames arena project, Alberta government pitching in
A deal has been reached to replace Calgary's aging Saddledome with a new event centre and make improvements to the surrounding area east of downtown. [CP]
The writ drop is less than a week away and Calgary learns it is getting a new NHL arena. But here's the fine print from the UCP's own announcement:
"The UCP government’s commitments in this agreement are subject to Cabinet and Treasury Board approval by August 2023. 
"I wanted to ensure that Calgarians, in particular, knew about this commitment prior to the upcoming election as I want a mandate to get this project done as we've proposed. To be clear, a vote for the UCP is also a vote for moving full steam ahead with this arena project," added Premier Smith." [United Conservative Party]

The RNC's latest attack ad features AI-generated depictions of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris with far too many teeth. As political atttack ads go this copy is pretty lame -- but apparently this is the first such ad generated entirely by AI. [Endgadget]

Iranian hackers broke into to a system used by a U.S. municipal government to publish election results in 2020 but were discovered by cyber soldiers operating abroad and kicked out before an attack could be launched, according to U.S. military and cybersecurity officials. [AP]

Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is set to face a new trial on extremism charges that he has described as a Kremlin-ordered effort to extend his time behind bars. An ally says the charges retroactively criminalize the activities of Navalny's anti-corruption foundation. The judge closed the hearing to the public minutes after it opened. [AP]
