In our bureau, we use the Trint app and platform to provide real-time transcriptions of press conferences, committee meetings etc. But I just discovered yesterday, thanks to a colleague, that Microsoft has built in transcription to the Web and Windows edition of Microsoft Word. It's pretty fast, too -- faster, in some ways, than Trint. One thing Word's transcribe cannot do is adjust 'time-code'. In the broadcast world, we tend to create original video content containing time-of-day timecode, i.e. at 2:24:32 the Prime Minister said this or that in the House of Commons. But most audio recording devices used straight "run-time" code. So if you turned your recorder in the House of Commons at 2:15 pm, the PM clip you wanted would happen 9 minutes and 24 seconds into your tape. Trint allows you to set what would be the 0:00:00 point in your recording to a specific time-of-day, allowing you to match up your broadcast tape with your transcription. While Word's transcription doesn't yet do that, the service is robust and accurate enough -- in English, mind you -- to be a great backup or a full-time transcription service for those who do not need to adjust their time-code. - DA [Microsoft]
