Olympic
Not wanting to jinx anything at the Vancouver Olympics of 2010, Canada Post did not even announce that it would publish this stamp until one hour after Alexandre Bilodeau became the first Canadian athlete to win Olympic gold on home soil. Bilodeau won that gold in the men’s moguls event, held in the afternoon at Cypress Mountain. The stamps were then put on sale in Vancouver the next day — Feb. 15 — and were available in the rest of the country shortly thereafter.

Canada Post’s Jim Philips said at the time of release: “Every stamp is confidential for a period of time but this one demanded a whole new level of secrecy since there was a chance, however unlikely, that it would never be released.”

Canada Post needn’t have worried: Bilodeau was the first of 14 gold medals to be awarded to Canadian athletes or teams at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics which, at the time, was a record for most gold medals by any country ever at a Winter Olympics.
